Often, we find ourselves in front of the following questions:


What is GEOSS:

GEOSS or Global Earth Observing System of Systems is an infrastructure of earth observations, sensors and communities formulating models within 9 Societal Benefit Areas (specifically, disasters, health, weather, energy, water, climate, agriculture, ecology,biodiversity) Lucia Lovison, Ph.D. LAGF, 2014. Here, we focus on capability building -- that means how an organization can exploit its new found skills and knowledge.


What is AIP-Capacity Building:

AIP (Architecture Implementation Pilot projects Capacity Building is the activity that addresses not only technical issues such as the building of interoperable interfaces for sensors and models according to geospatial standards, but also human interoperability, addressing communication and issues between people and agencies.Lucia Lovison, Ph.D., 2014. Here, we focus both on capacity building (as indicated above) and on capability building -- that means how an organization can exploit its new found skills and knowledge.



How to exchange your data and services through Interoperable Interfaces:

Data and Services are exchanged in near real time though interoperable interfaces. The interoperability of geospatial data is assured by translating the metadata and the data into standard user interfaces. The standards followed are OGC and ISO TC211 standards.


How to register resources at GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI):

This is a very complex question.

There are several ways to register your AIP resources:

1- Register using the GCI registration flow at


2- Register using a broker service, like the one from the Stefano Nativi, CNR, WG at!geoss-brok...ramework/c1ih9 (more below)

3- There are AIP Working Groups that do not believe in registering at all some data and services following the registration procedures highlighted in point1. For example, some people (such as Stuart Frye) hope that programmatically (according to geospatial standards) will be possibile to register to the GEO Common Infrastructure (GCI) in an easier and more expeditious way several data and metadata products.

  Once the data and services are registered, they can be searched, and discovered by the GEO Community.
