Data Harmonisation: Information Interoperability

Interoperability can exist at many levels. As part of the UncertWeb and GeoViQua projects Dan Cornford has writen a discussion document addressing the importance of probabilistic uncertainty assessment in achieving true interoperability (information interoperability) for Earth observations and derived products. This has been considered in the GEOSS AIP3 data harmonisation task.



The paper discusses relevant standards including QA4EO - and focusses on the importance of a probabilistic representation of uncertainty with respect to a well defined reality. Only once this is present can the data be used rationally in a any real context - without this data cannot be combined, compared, or used to inform decisions or judgements.
