Data Harmonization AIP Working Group

This working group is under the guidance and oversight of the GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot (AIP) program.  The details of the AIP, and more links to AIP resources, can be found here.

Focus of Working Group

The focus of the Data Harmonization AIP Working Group is to leverage contributions to GEOSS related to Information Modeling. Several action items have been identified to address this goal:

  • Reconcile the typical WMO/CEOS 'geophysical parameters' with the modeling of 'geographical features'
  • Coordinate with the GEO task DA-09-01a on Quality Assurance for Earth Observations (QA4EO)
  • Coordinate with the GEO task DA-09-01b on Data, Metadata & Products Harmonization

A prominent role was identified for quality assurance procedures and quality measurements encodings for the development of interoperable, service-based, community applications. Such applications would aim at supporting the combination of multiple source data products in a coherent way, so the resulting products are known reliable to a usage domain.

Summary of Working Group Activities

The DHWG accomplishments and timeline are as follows:

  • Leverage the contributed scenarios, from May to October 2010, through DHWG telecons and email list:
    • MyOcean’s GMES Marine [GIGAS / MyOcean]
      • with focus on a Data Access engineering use case
    • The South Esk Hydrological Sensor Web [CSIRO]
      • with focus on a Data Access engineering use case
    • Relationships between physical and biological variables [PML / NETMAR]
      • with focus on a Web Processing engineering use case
    • Uncertainty enabled pressure correction chain [ASTON / UncertWeb]
      • with focus on a Web Processing engineering use case
  • Coordinate with the GEO task DA-09-01a on Quality Assurance for Earth Observations (QA4EO)
      • QA4EO biweekly telecons from  September to December 2010
  • Coordinate with the GEO task DA-09-01b on Data, Metadata & Products Harmonization
      • Joint telecons in May and September 2010
  • Produce AIP Engineering Report, Dec.2010-Jan.2011
    • Structure the contributed scenarios and use cases within AIP document templates, to emphasize the engineering use cases that are conveying requirements of interest for GEOSS Data Harmoization goals.
    • Elicit Data Harmonization recommendations, out of the identified requirements, towards the GCI-TF and the SIF.

Engineering Report Summary

The Data Harmonization ER written by the working group develops the following approach:

  • The AIP-3 DHWG participants have addressed through their contributions a set of scenarios related to GEOSS communities.These scenarios describe how the application of Earth Observation data will be of societal benefit, and in summary present the scientific basis and the end goals.
  • Such scenarios and their references to engineering Use Cases have been documented accordingly to AIP templates, as designed during AIP-2.
  • The provided solutions or illustrations to the Data Harmonization issues within GEOSS are ultimately described through the 'engineering use cases' of the Scenarios (e.g. a concrete implementation of a data access standard interface), also accordingly to the template designed during AIP-2.
  • Typical engineering use case descriptions convey elements that are offering a set of requirements, highlighted in a dedicated section when directly related to Data Harmonization.
  • Recommendations to the GEOSS governance bodies are then formulated based on these requirements. A set of about 20 recommendations mainly addresses the following topics:
      • The development of the geosphysical parameters semantics and use for GEOSS data discovery, along with online management of supporting conceptual schemas, encoding schemas (e.g. XML schemas and Schematron), controlled vocabularies, code lists, and glossaries.
      • The registration of additional supporting standards into the SIR, and the need for additional guidance on their use from the CSR and the Best Practices Wiki (through cross-linking strategies)
      • Some enhanced governance and liaisons within GEOSS for the quality assurance processes and data products quality indicators.
